Nominations Committee
 
Committee Responsibilities: The Nominations Committee shall be responsible for identifying candidates for the position of President and for open Board of Trustee positions and for gathering the information needed for the official ballot. Specific MEA Bylaw requirements for elections are as follows:

  1. Committee selects at least two candidates for each vacancy on the Board of Directors and for the position of President. The President must have had a sustained membership in the organization for the past three years, serves a two-year term in office, and may serve only two consecutive terms. The Board members serve three-year terms beginning July 1 and may serve only two consecutive terms.
  2. Nominations, along with all supporting materials needed for the election ballot, should be sent to the President by the Committee no later than January 15 of each election year.
  3. Nominations are certified through the President and then sent to members by mail ballot.
  4. Professional or Executive members not endorsed by the committee may stand for elections (and appear on the mail ballot) by submitting a written request to the President along with not less than 50 supporting signatures of Professional members , not later than January 1 prior to that year's election.
  5. Ballots are sent to members from the MEA National Office no later than March 1 of each year and returned to the MEA National Office no later than April 1 of the same year.
  6. Submit a written report of committee activities to the MEA Board of Directors.
Committee Guidelines: The Nominations Committee consists of five Professional or Executive members (none of whom are serving on the Board) appointed by the President with the approval of the Board of Directors. The most immediate Past President shall serve as the Chair. If the immediate Past President is not available, the current President shall appoint a Chair. All committee members must be members of MEA. When filling committee positions consideration should be given for representation from various regions of the United States as well as for employment classifications such as secondary, post-secondary, and teacher education.
